Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Gender Equity in Energy Roundtable, where I joined industry leaders in discussing the challenges and opportunities for improving diversity in our sector. Conversations like these are essential in shaping policies and strategies that drive meaningful change.Â
Â
The Australian power sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by technological advancements, the energy transition, and workforce shifts. To navigate these changes, embracing diversity is essential—ensuring the industry benefits from a broad range of perspectives, experiences, and skills.Â
Â
A diverse workforce is a stronger, more innovative, and more resilient workforce. At API, we are committed to fostering gender and cultural diversity, making the energy sector more inclusive, attracting top talent, and ensuring long-term industry competitiveness.Â

The State of Diversity in Australia's Energy WorkforceÂ
While progress has been made, diversity gaps persist in the Australian power sector:Â
39%Â of the energy workforce is female, yet 62%Â of these women hold administration roles rather than technical or leadership positions.Â
Only 16% of engineering graduates are women, half will enter an engineering field and half of them leave the profession within their first 10 years.Â
Just 0.8% of the workforce identifies as Indigenous, compared to 3.3% of Australia’s population.Â
68%Â of energy sector employees were born in Australia, closely mirroring national demographics (67%).Â
19% of employees have faced disadvantages due to diversity, with sexism being the most commonly reported barrier.Â
Â
These statistics highlight systemic challenges in entry, retention, and career progression for underrepresented groups. Addressing these barriers isn’t just about fairness—it’s about strengthening the industry through diverse talent and perspectives.Â
Â
API’s Commitment to ChangeÂ
To foster a more inclusive and accessible workforce, API has restructured our two-week Summer School program to better support diverse participants. Over the past three years, we have made the residential program more family- and culturally-friendly, balancing technical learning, industry engagement, and time for reflection.Â
Â
By refining our approach, we have removed barriers that previously limited participation, making energy careers more accessible and sustainable for individuals from all backgrounds. A key focus has been creating strong talent pathways for women in energy, ensuring they have the support, networks, and opportunities needed to advance in the sector.Â
Â
Advancing Women in the Power SectorÂ
API is driving change through the Powerful Women’s Program, providing targeted support for women in the energy industry. Through this initiative, we have:Â
Secured $1MÂ in Federal Government funding (2022-2024).Â
Supported 210 women through mentoring, networking, and career development.Â
Engaged 76 industry leaders to present and support the program.Â
Established career pathways from undergraduate roles to senior management.Â
Fostered a culture where women support women, ensuring leadership and technical roles remain accessible.Â
Â
"Keep putting a spotlight on diversity so that organisations put intentional strategies and actions in place to attract diverse talent and foster a culture that celebrates diversity and equality. It usually starts at the top!" – Survey Respondent, Diversity in Renewables SurveyÂ
Â
Shaping the Future of Diversity in EnergyÂ
Diversity in the power sector isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a business necessity. The future of energy depends on attracting and retaining the best talent, which requires equitable opportunities for all, regardless of gender, culture, or background.Â
Â
At API, we are proud to lead the way in fostering a more inclusive energy sector. We invite companies, educators, and students to join us in building a workforce that is stronger, smarter, and creating real talent pathways for women in energy.Â
