Powering Stories: The Impact of the 2026 API Power Up Video Challenge

The 2026 API Power Up Video Challenge has wrapped up, and what a result it has delivered for our community.

This year, 25 student videos were submitted, generating more than 3,000 views across our platforms. More importantly, each video offered something far more valuable than a number, a genuine, first-hand insight into what it is like to step into the power industry through a vacation placement.

From control rooms to construction sites, and from planning teams to field work, these videos brought the student experience to life. They captured not just the technical learning, but the confidence gained, the connections formed, and the excitement of contributing to an industry undergoing rapid transformation.

At its core, the Video Challenge is about storytelling. It provides students with a platform to reflect on their experiences, while giving future applicants a real and relatable window into the opportunities available across API member organisations.

The strength of this year’s submissions made it clear just how impactful these placements are. Students spoke openly about their projects, the support they received, and how the experience shaped their career direction.

After an incredible response from the community, we were proud to celebrate both our People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice winners.

Taking out the People’s Choice Award, Matthew Hocking from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) captured the attention of the community with a video that stood out for its engagement and storytelling . His entry resonated strongly with viewers and reflected the enthusiasm we continue to see from students across the program.

In the Judges’ Choice Award, Caleb Rodgers from SA Power Networks was recognised for delivering a compelling and insightful video that highlighted both the technical experience and the real-world impact of working in the sector .

We also acknowledge the outstanding group of finalists across both categories, who each demonstrated the depth of talent emerging through the Power Up community. Their videos showcased diverse pathways, projects, and perspectives, reinforcing the breadth of opportunity within the power sector.

Beyond the winners, the broader impact of the challenge is where its true value lies.

These 25 videos now form a growing library of authentic student experiences, helping to demystify the industry and inspire the next cohort of students to

take the first step. For many viewers, this is their first real glimpse into what a career in power can look like.

For participating students, the challenge builds confidence, communication skills, and a stronger sense of connection to the industry. For employers, it provides a powerful way to showcase the meaningful work being done across the sector through the voices of those experiencing it firsthand.

A huge thank you to every student who participated, and to the community who supported them by watching, sharing, and voting.

If this year is anything to go by, the future of the power sector is not only capable, it is engaged, passionate, and ready to lead.
