More Than a Scholarship: Why Sharing the API Power Up Scholarship Matters

Updated: Jun 18

Know an engineering student? Share the Power Up Scholarship today. (Closes Tuesday 30th June)

As our industry works to deliver a reliable, affordable and increasingly sustainable energy system, one challenge remains consistent across every organisation: attracting, developing and retaining the next generation of engineering talent. That is why the API Power Up Scholarship exists. While the scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate engineering students, its true value extends far beyond the annual funding. The program is designed to help students discover the opportunities available within the power sector, connect with industry professionals, and build the confidence, networks and experiences that will support their transition from university to the workforce.

Each year, we meet talented students who have never considered a career in the power industry simply because they have not been exposed to it. Others may have heard of the sector but have limited understanding of the diverse and rewarding careers available across transmission, distribution, generation, consulting, market operations, renewable energy integration, asset management, technology, planning and emerging energy solutions.

The Power Up Scholarship helps bridge this gap.

Through the program, students gain access to a national community of peers, industry events, networking opportunities, career development activities and exposure to paid placement opportunities with API member organisations. These experiences help students make informed career decisions while building stronger connections between education and industry.

Importantly, the scholarship is not just for students who already have extensive experience or a detailed career plan. We are looking for first and second year students who are curious, motivated and willing to learn. Students who demonstrate initiative, ask questions and are excited about contributing to the future of Australia's energy system. This is where the wider industry can play an important role. Many of the best scholarship applicants hear about the opportunity through personal recommendations. They may be the son or daughter of a colleague, a student undertaking a university project, a young person seeking career advice, or someone connected through your professional or community networks.

By sharing the scholarship with your networks, you are helping talented students discover opportunities they may not otherwise encounter. A simple conversation, email, social media post or recommendation can introduce a future engineer to an industry that needs their skills and enthusiasm.

Workforce development is a collective responsibility and the purpose of the API. Building a strong pipeline of future engineers requires collaboration between industry, universities, professional associations, educators, families and individuals who are passionate about the future of the sector.

The API Power Up Scholarship is one way we can work together to achieve that goal.

Applications for the 2026 scholarship intake are now open and close on 30 June 2026. If you know an engineering student who may be interested, we encourage you to share the opportunity and help us continue building the future workforce that will power Australia for decades to come.
