2026 API Summer School: Work Hard, Play Moderate

And just like that, the 2026 API Summer School in Brisbane has come to an end.

Across two fast-paced weeks, participants from across the Australian power sector came together for a program that was technically rich, professionally challenging and deeply energising. From technical sessions and site visits to leadership discussions, stakeholder engagement, communication practice and strategic project work, the program once again proved why Summer School is such a valuable experience for engineers and professionals working through the energy transition.

A key theme throughout the two weeks was getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Participants were encouraged to step outside their usual roles, stretch their thinking, ask better questions, work with people from different organisations and disciplines, and challenge themselves in a supportive environment.

Our unofficial motto for the fortnight was simple: work hard, play moderate. And we are pleased to report, it worked a charm.

Learning Across the Technical and Human Sides of the Sector

The 2026 program brought together a broad mix of technical and non-technical skill development, recognising that the future of the power sector will rely on both engineering excellence and strong people skills.

Participants explored the technical challenges shaping the industry, including network transformation, renewable integration, system security, emerging technologies, customer and community expectations, and the practical realities of delivering major projects.

At the same time, the program placed a strong focus on communication, leadership, stakeholder engagement, collaboration and professional confidence. These are the skills that help technical professionals move from good engineering thinking to meaningful impact.

Knowledge Sharing and Professional Networks

One of the clear highlights of the 2026 Summer School was the knowledge sharing across the cohort. Participants did not just learn from speakers and facilitators. They learned from each other. Through presentations, group discussions, project work, panels, site visits and informal conversations, the cohort shared their own experiences, lessons and perspectives from across the sector.

Just as important were the professional networks formed along the way. Over two weeks, participants built connections across organisations, states, career stages and areas of expertise. These networks are one of the most valuable parts of Summer School. They create a national community of power professionals who can continue learning from, supporting and challenging each other long after the program ends.

There was also plenty of bonding along the way, with the cohort embracing the full Summer School experience. The result was a program that felt not only professionally valuable, but genuinely memorable.

Strategic Challenge Reports Now Available

A major part of the 2026 Summer School was the Strategic Challenge project work, where participants explored some of the complex, real-world challenges facing the Australian power sector.

The final Strategic Challenge Reports are now available and provide a valuable resource for participants, API members and the broader power sector.

These reports can be used in a range of professional contexts, including:

  • Starting conversations within your organisation about current and emerging industry challenges

  • Supporting internal learning and development discussions

  • Informing team strategy sessions, graduate programs or professional development activities

  • Providing fresh perspectives on complex sector-wide problems

  • Helping participants continue applying their Summer School learnings in their day-to-day work

The reports are a practical reminder that Summer School is not just a two-week program. It is a platform for ongoing learning, collaboration and contribution to the sector.

Looking Ahead to 2027

We are also excited to announce that the 2027 API Summer School will be held in Adelaide in May 2027

So, technically, it may be more of an “Autumn School” than a Summer School, but the spirit of the program will remain the same: bringing together passionate power professionals for an intensive, energising and career-shaping experience.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the 2026 Summer School possible, including our participants, speakers, facilitators, API members, board members, hosts, supporters and staff.

The two weeks may have flown by, but the lessons, connections and momentum will continue well beyond Brisbane.

Here’s to the 2026 cohort, and to continuing the work of building the future power sector together.
