Each year on 23 June, engineers and allies around the world come together to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)—a global initiative dedicated to raising the profile of women in engineering and encouraging more young women to consider it as a career path.
In 2025, INWED marks its 12th year, and the Australian Power Institute (API) was thrilled to be joining the celebrations once again with a special online event yesterday on Monday 23 June. This year’s theme, #TogetherWeEngineer, reminds us that great engineering is never done in isolation—it’s powered by collaboration, inclusion, and shared leadership.
So this year, we did things a little differently.

A Fresh Take on Celebrating Women in Engineering
Instead of the usual panel format, we brought together insights and stories through:
A keynote reflection from a leading woman in energy and infrastructure,
Live audience Q&A, and
A fun, fast quiz round (yes—there are prizes!).
We dived in to real-world topics like:
How women are collaborating to lead major energy projects,
What it takes to navigate leadership in engineering and governance,
And what we can all do—regardless of our role—to build a more inclusive profession.
The event was for everyone in the energy and engineering community: students exploring career options, professionals building their path, and leaders looking to shape the future of their teams.
We will be releasing the event recording and transcript this week, so keep an eye out on API's social accounts, or request a copy via info@api.edu now.
Why It Matters
Let’s face it—women are still underrepresented in engineering. In 2024, just 14% of engineers in Australia were women, and the global average wasn’t much higher at 16.5%. That’s why visibility matters. That’s why events like INWED matter.
By showcasing the success and leadership of women in engineering, we’re helping young women see what’s possible—and helping employers understand why inclusion is essential to the future of our sector.
At API, we’re committed to building a more diverse and capable power sector workforce—and INWED is a key part of that mission.

Looking Ahead to INWED 2026
If you joined us in 2025, you already know this is more than a once-a-year conversation. It’s part of a broader effort to connect, support, and champion women in engineering throughout the year—and we’re already planning how to take INWED 2026 even further.
So while you're reflecting on this year’s event, take a moment to think ahead. What more can we achieve together next year? Who will you invite? What stories will you share?
Because Together We Engineer isn’t just a slogan—it’s a call to action.
