In late July, the Australian Power Institute (API) team joined the University of Queensland’s Engineering Career Fair for high school students — an inspiring day dedicated to sparking curiosity and ambition in the next generation of engineers.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase API’s Careers in Power program, which helps young people understand the diverse and exciting career pathways in the power sector. We were especially excited to introduce students to our 'Electrify Your Future - Students' program — a unique initiative designed to connect students with experienced power sector professionals who can share insights, guidance, and encouragement as mentors.

Throughout the day, our team spoke with enthusiastic students exploring their study and career options. Many were surprised to learn about the variety of roles available in the power sector — from renewable energy engineering to digital technology and project management — and how these roles are shaping Australia’s energy future.

It wasn’t just the students who were engaged. Parents and caregivers also took the opportunity to learn about how the 'Electrify Your Future - Mentors' newsletter supports industry mentoring, providing valuable connections for students while also offering professionals the chance to give back to the community and inspire the engineers of tomorrow.

By the end of the day, we’d made dozens of meaningful connections, shared resources, and sparked conversations about what’s possible in the world of energy. Events like this remind us why outreach matters — because the journey to a cleaner, smarter, and more reliable power system starts with inspiring young minds.
