What to Expect at API Summer School: Two Weeks That Will Change How You Think About the Power Sector

Updated: 2 days ago

Walking into your first day of API Summer School can feel a little daunting. You’re stepping into a room full of experienced professionals from across Australia’s power industry, many of whom you’ve never met, all about to spend two intensive weeks learning, debating and problem-solving together. A few nerves are completely normal. In fact, they’re expected.

Hosted by the Australian Power Institute, Summer School is deliberately immersive. From day one, participants are encouraged to be present, curious and ready to engage. This is not a conference where you sit at the back of the room checking emails. It’s a rare opportunity to be properly “locked in” learning without the usual workplace distractions. Phones are away, laptops are used with purpose, and your focus is on the people and conversations in front of you.

The two week intensive format was a valuable opportunity to fully immerse myself in the program. The pace kept me engaged, and the structure allowed me to quickly build a strong foundation of knowledge while still having the space to reflect and apply what I was learning.” Thiew Atem, Project Engineer, Powerlink Queensland (2024 Summer School Participant)

One of the most powerful aspects of Summer School is the network you build. Over two weeks, you move quickly from introductions to genuine professional relationships. You’ll find yourself working closely with people from different organisations, roles and regions, all bringing their own perspectives on the energy transition and the challenges facing the sector. Coffee breaks, group activities and evening discussions often become just as valuable as the formal sessions, and many participants leave with contacts they rely on long after the program ends.

“One of the most rewarding aspects was the networking. Connecting with peers from across the industry created a genuinely collaborative environment, and the conversations—both in and outside the sessions—added depth to the overall experience. It was encouraging to meet others facing similar challenges and to learn from the diverse perspectives in the room.”  Thiew Atem

Summer School also gets you out from behind the desk. Site tours are a key part of the experience, so yes, you really do need to bring all your hi-vis gear. Seeing assets, infrastructure and projects up close helps connect theory to reality and gives context to the big-picture discussions happening in the classroom. It’s practical, tangible learning that reminds you why the work matters.

Equally important is your mindset. Summer School works best when participants are open to learning new things and hearing ideas that may challenge their own. You’ll be exposed to technical concepts, strategic thinking and leadership perspectives that stretch beyond your day-to-day role. Being willing to ask questions, contribute honestly and learn from others is what turns a demanding program into a genuinely transformative one.

“Participating in the Summer School also gave me several professional insights, particularly around how different organisations approach emerging energy sector issues. Personally, it helped strengthen my confidence in contributing to broader industry discussions.” Thiew Atem

Communication skills are front and centre throughout the two weeks. You’ll practise articulating ideas clearly, contributing to group problem-solving and presenting viewpoints in a professional and persuasive way. Whether you’re explaining a technical issue to a non-technical audience or debating future system challenges with peers, strong communication is essential and actively developed.

By the end of the two weeks, the initial nerves are long gone, replaced by confidence, clarity and a renewed sense of purpose. Summer School is intense, challenging and deeply rewarding. It’s a chance to step out of your usual environment, think differently about the power sector, and return to work better equipped, better connected and ready to make an impact.

If you’re prepared to commit fully, be present and lean into the experience, API Summer School will give you far more than professional development. It will give you perspective.
