Why We Should Commit to Equal by 30

The energy sector is changing rapidly as we move toward a cleaner and more resilient grid. With major infrastructure programs underway, the need for skilled people is growing fast. To meet this challenge, we need to draw from the full talent pool, not just part of it and this is where Equal by 30 matters. The campaign calls for equal pay, equal leadership and equal opportunities for women in the clean energy sector by 2030. It is a commitment that speaks to fairness, but it is also a practical step that strengthens our workforce and improves outcomes across the sector.

Women remain underrepresented in many technical and leadership roles. When organisations commit to Equal by 30, they demonstrate that they are serious about creating a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to participate and succeed. This builds trust, improves culture and supports retention at a time when workforce stability is critical.

It also improves decision making. The energy transition involves complex social, environmental and technical challenges. Diverse teams are better equipped to understand community concerns, consider different viewpoints and reach balanced decisions that work in the real world. When we ask ourselves who is at the table and who is missing, we open up opportunities to improve.

The question then becomes: why should your organisation become a signatory to Equal by 30? Because doing so sends a clear message about your values. It shows current and future staff that you are committed to fairness and progress. It creates an expectation of action rather than words. And it connects you to a growing network of organisations working together to build a more inclusive energy future.

The API chose to be part of Equal by 30 because we know that the sector will only succeed if everyone is included. We are also an active participant in the Women in Energy Roundtable. This raises an important reflection for your organisation: who is representing you in that conversation? If the answer is no one, or if you are unsure, it may be time to reconnect, re-engage or nominate someone new.

Call to Action

Check whether your organisation is already a signatory to Equal by 30. If it is, make sure your involvement is active and visible. If it is not, consider joining us and many of our members in making the commitment.

Together, we can build a stronger and more inclusive energy workforce for the future.
