You might’ve noticed things changing fast—social apps that used to be everywhere are disappearing for users under 16. That’s because the Australian government has passed a world‑first law banning under‑16s from accessing social media platforms. It covers heavy hitters like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Reddit, X, and even YouTube starting December 10, 2025.

The law, called the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, gives platforms a year to roll out age‑verification systems—or they could face fines up to $49.5 million

What This Means for You

  • No more TikTok, Insta, Snapchat, or YouTube (with an account) if you're under 16—unless it's YouTube Kids or you use an adult’s account.

  • Platforms will be in charge of enforcement, using tech like age checks—or risk huge penalties

  • The rollout feels a bit rushed, with implementation still unclear and youth advocates raising valid concerns.

Why It Matters to You

This isn’t just about apps disappearing—it’s about how you connect, learn, and get inspired:

  • For many teens, social media isn’t just entertainment—it’s a lifeline, especially for those in remote areas or marginalized communities like LGBTQ+ youth ABC.

  • Experts warn that without platforms, young voices can feel isolated, and those who already struggle to connect may be hit hardest 9News.

  • Meanwhile, government leaders say the ban is about protecting your wellbeing—not taking away your space—and putting "parents ahead of platforms"
