API Recognised for Innovation in Graduate Development at the 2025 AGRIAs

The Australian Power Institute (API) has been named a finalist for the Will Spensley Memorial Award for Innovation in the Graduate Market (Associate Member Category) at the 2025 Australian Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) Graduate Recruitment Industry Awards (AGRIAs). 🌟

This recognition celebrates API’s commitment to developing Australia’s future power sector workforce through innovative programs that connect students, graduates, and professionals across the energy sector. ⚡

Bridging a Critical Gap in the Power Workforce

API’s nomination centres on the creation of the Summer School Developing Professionals Stream — a new program designed to address a missing piece in the power sector’s talent pipeline: structured development for early career professionals with 4–6 years of experience.

These professionals sit beyond traditional graduate programs but are not yet in leadership roles. In a sector undergoing rapid transformation, they require more than technical capability — they must engage confidently with landholders, regulators, policymakers, and customers, while leading in areas such as communication, stakeholder engagement, diversity, and innovation. 💡

A Cohesive Program for a Connected Sector

API’s innovative approach was to integrate proven initiatives into a blended, cross-generational learning experience — combining online learning, in-person engagement, and industry collaboration. The result was a program that created genuine synergies and delivered more than the sum of its parts, connecting participants with over 70 industry peers from across the career spectrum. 🦺⚙️

Key elements of the program include:

  • #APIExecutiveInsights online modules exploring strategic sector challenges and how emerging professionals can contribute

  • Immersive participation in the #APISummerSchool, alongside 50+ mid-career professionals

  • Site tours and shared experiences with 20+ undergraduates

  • The API Powered by #Diversity Forum, highlighting leadership and inclusion in energy

  • Targeted stakeholder engagement training delivered by Engineers Australia and Campus Consultancy

Proven Impact and a Scalable Future

The 2025 pilot exceeded all expectations, with 28 participants (43% women) representing organisations from across API’s membership. Employers reported measurable improvements in capability, confidence, and cross-level networking.

With annual delivery now locked in and scope to expand to 40+ participants, the Developing Professionals stream is helping to build a stronger, more connected, and more capable workforce ready to lead Australia’s energy transition. 🔋
