If you ever miss out on an opportunity or a position you were really hoping to get, don't give up! I've found that every time I've been knocked back another opportunity was right around the corner, even if it wasn't exactly what I expected. If you continue to pursue the things that truly interest and excite you, you'll find a role that's the perfect fit for your skills, passions, and growth.
Who am I
Hi! I'm Laura and I'm in my final year of a Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Queensland. I decided to do engineering because I'm passionate about making a difference in my community, and wanted to contribute to solutions that improve people's quality of life. I love working in teams and was an executive officer in the UQ Skirts in Engineering society from 2022 to 2024.
Why I chose a career in power
I'm choosing a career in the power industry because I want to play a role in the energy transition to reach net zero. Climate change poses an increasing threat, especially to the most vulnerable people in our societies, and rapid change is required in the power sector to avoid this threat worsening. Working in the industry will allow me to contribute positively to this change.
Where it all started
Because the industry is changing so rapidly, there are a lot of new technical challenges emerging that must be overcome to maintain a reliable supply of energy to homes and essential services. I am excited to work collaboratively with others to develop unique solutions to unforeseen problems, and to be at the forefront of innovation in power systems.
My work experience.
What's next?
My first work placement was at Wood in their Integrity Management team, where my work focused on ensuring the maintenance and repair of assets involved in gas production. Through this role I developed experience with very large datasets, as well as professional communication skills when interacting with clients. My most recent work placement was at Aurecon in the Queensland Energy team, where I performed analysis for clients to ensure the safe and efficient operation of power systems assets. I am currently employed at Aurecon in the Queensland Energy team and have been offered a graduate role.
