Workplace

Network, Network and Network! Building connections with industry professionals can open doors to opportunities, mentorship, and insights into emerging technologies. Through the API TJ Effeney Award, I had the chance to attend an energy conference in Melbourne, where I engaged with experts discussing Australia's future grid challenges and the transition to renewable energy. Events like these provide invaluable exposure to real-world issues and innovative solutions, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in shaping the industry's future.

Who am I

I'm in my final year of Electrical Engineering at UWA, where I've developed a strong interest in power systems and control engineering. Beyond my studies, I'm involved in university social sports teams, playing cricket, soccer, and tennis. I also enjoy challenging myself with new hobbies right now, I'm attempting to learn guitar, but failing miserably! Previously, I was part of Engineers Without Borders and UWA aerospace, where I had the opportunity to design avionics systems for rockets, which strengthened my problem-solving skills and teamwork.

Why I chose a career in power

I’m choosing a career in the power industry because I’m passionate about electrical systems and how they impact society on a large scale. Through my studies in electrical engineering at UWA and my internship at Horizon Power, I’ve developed a keen interest in power systems, grid reliability, and renewable energy integration. The transition to cleaner and more efficient energy solutions is one of the biggest challenges today, and I want to contribute to innovative solutions that enhance power distribution and sustainability. I enjoy problem-solving and working on real-world engineering challenges, and the power industry offers an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact."

Where it all started

The power industry excites me because it's constantly evolving, with new technologies shaping the future of energy. The shift towards renewables, smarter grids, and greater efficiency presents exciting challenges that require innovation and problem-solving. I’m drawn to this dynamic environment where I can apply my skills to real-world solutions and be part of an industry that’s always changing and improving.

My work experience.
What's next?

I have previously worked for Alcoa and Horizon Power through the API in the Instrumentation and Reliability teams. My highlight was the Carnarvon substation tour, where I gained hands-on experience with power systems in a remote setting. It gave me valuable insight into the challenges of maintaining reliable infrastructure in regional areas. I am currently an Undergraduate Design Engineer at Jacobs, working within the Power Infrastructure team. My role involves contributing to key projects, including the design and management of power supply systems for the Woodman Biogas Sludge Upgrade for Water Corp. I would love to be considered for a graduate role at any API organisation.
