Top Electives to take in Year 11 and 12 to Prepare for a Career in the Power Industry

As elective selection deadlines approach for senior high school students, you're likely seeking advice from anyone you know about what to study next year.

"Choosing subjects you're passionate about is a no-brainer; you'll be spending countless hours studying them, so you might as well enjoy them! However, it's also essential to consider your future career path and the skills that will prepare you for a job you'll love."

Before you choose your electives, look up all the deets on your dream TAFE, university or VET course to see if they have any recommended knowledge. Studying these subjects in Year 11 and 12 will help you out big time – think of it like a head start.

The great thing about STEM electives is that they complement almost any other field of study. Whether it's science and sports, tech and fashion, or math and environmental conservation, there's likely a career that combines a STEM subject with your interests.

Choosing the right electives in Year 11 and 12 is crucial if you're considering a career in the energy sector or power industry. Here are some recommended subjects:

  • VET Qualifications: Secondary school students can enrol in nationally recognised VET together with other school subjects. This includes doing school-based apprenticeships or traineeships. Provided students meet necessary requirements, they can finish school with a VET qualification along with their secondary school certificate.

Selecting these subjects will provide you with a solid foundation in the principles and technologies used in the energy sector, preparing you for further education and careers in this field.
