Choosing a career in the power industry means having the privilege of knowing that your work is helping millions of people have safe and reliable access to electricity, which is an essential part of everyone's lives.

Who am I

My name is Teshini De Silva, and I am originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Growing up, I developed a love for engineering, which led me to travel to Melbourne right after high school to pursue my Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RMIT University. My background and interests have given me a unique perspective on life, and I am always eager to learn more and explore new opportunities in the power industry. I have a passion for traveling and experiencing new cultures and food, which has shaped many of my experiences and pursuits. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking and exploring new trails with my husband and daughter.

Why I chose a career in power

Choosing a career in the power industry means committing to a future of innovation and sustainability, where your work not only powers homes and businesses but also drives the progress toward a cleaner, more efficient world. I have always been determined to add my contribution towards the drive of achieving net-zero emissions and providing safe and clean energy for all communities.

Where it all started

I was always interested in mathematics and physics from a young age so after graduating high school, I pursued my bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RMIT University. While completing my Bachelor's degree, I joined CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy as a vacation Engineering Student in the Technical Standards team. Since then, I have remained at the same company, moving across different departments and teams since starting the graduate program. During this time, I also worked one year at Beon Energy Solutions, which is the non- regulated sector of the business.

My work experience.
What's next?

I am working as a Network solutions Engineer at CitiPower and Powercor which distributes electricity across the western suburbs of Melbourne, central and western Victoria, Melbourne’s CBD and inner suburbs. I look after customer connections in Victoria's southern areas as well as build network solutions taking future plans into consideration among other responsibilities. The future of the power industry excites me because of the incredible potential for innovation and sustainability. Advances in renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, are paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape. The integration of smart grids and energy storage solutions promises greater efficiency and reliability in power distribution. These developments not only aim to reduce our carbon footprint but also to ensure energy accessibility and security for future generations.
