"What excites me most about the power industry is the number of unsolved problems and room for innovation that the shift to renewables is creating, and that solutions to these problems are of great importance to society."

Who am I

I’m a highly self-motivated learner who enjoys teaching themselves new skills and sharing their enthusiasm with others – whether it’s about a new programming language or Salsa dance move. At UTAS I’m studying maths, statistics, and physics, of which statistics is my favourite. Recently I completed a summer research project in collaboration with the Migrant Resource Centre, using stochastic modelling to inform management of their short-term accommodation. I hope to pursue a career which offers both challenging, interesting problems, and the opportunity to have a positive impact on society.

Why I chose a career in power

What makes a career in the power industry attractive to me is the variety of pathways that are available. From programming control systems, to performing electricity forecasting for the National Electricity Market (NEM), to researching renewables, there are numerous opportunities that involve my skills and interests.

Where it all started

My work experience.
What's next?

My best experience in the industry so far has been my summer placement at TasNetworks. I was part of the Network Master Data team, responsible for managing network asset data. Memorable moments include learning about the scale and complexity of the NEM, getting my hands dirty at the field workforce training centre, and learning about their Eagle Strike-Risk Model, which used modelling techniques relevant to my studies.
